she wastes no time
drokka has the best timing ever. I'm sure she didn't realise it when she did it, but she bought me a birthday present from my wish list and it arrived today on my *'anti-birthday'. Well done, drokka and thank you so much! It really made my day! I hope you don't mind that I opened it. It didn't stand much of a chance, really...there's no way I can wait a month before opening it ;)
So, here I sit, having been kicked out of my favourite computer lab becuase some high school kids are having some sort of class there today. Right. I'm paying for this University (in theory), so I should have first dibs. Get out.
I fell in love with a poem today which is written chiefly in Scots. I thought about posting it up here, but there are so many footnotes and glossary terms I'd have to include that I'd be better off copying over when I have more time. I love it though.
Also, I'm reading T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land which, though I haven't had the time to analyse it, is becoming a quick favourite. It starts:
April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
How can you not instantly love this poem? Well, admittedly, I haven't read it all, but it's already appealing so I assume I'll like the remainder of it.
I have finally learned the real reason that Miles Winston is pulling up the carpet in front of the door. It's not necessarily becuase he wants out...well, he does, but that's not the sole reason.
I was walking up the close stairs the other day and I saw Miles sitting on the landing of the first floor. He was standing next to the flat door, meowing to get in. He looked upset and scared at seeing me (prolly becuase he thought he was going to get a bollocking for having escaped, which he was), and twittered on the step for a moment while I cooed at him to calm him.
Then I realised which some surprise, 'This isn't Miles!' But he did look just like my miles...right down to the black mask they both wear.
Upon closer inspection I saw more similarities and difference, not the least of which was the fact that Miles2 was a great deal heavier. I knocked on the door to the flat, a woman about my age answered pleasantly, and Miles2 darted into her flat.
Me: That's your cat then! I saw him standing by your door and wondered if he was yours.
Her: Yep. It's strange that he wants in already, I just let him out 2 minutes ago.
She just let him out.
She just let him out.
So...Miles2 has presumably been roaming the close foot loose and fancy free, while MilesW sits in the flat, whimpering, whining and tearing up the carpet in front of the door.
And now the idea appears along with a bunch of questions to which I don't know the answer:
- if Miles's twin gets to roam the close, would it be ok to let Miles roam also?
- And should I ask Miles2's owner first in case they fight (most probably will, being both males)?
- Should I get Miles a collar with his address on it in case he gets out of the building?
So many questions.
Today it is mild and mostly cloudy, with a slight breath of wind. No preciptation to speak of except for a light burst of wanna be snow around 1pm.
Happy Friday everyone and special hugs and kisses to drokka once again.

* The 'Anti-Birthday' is the day that the University thinks I was born. When filling out my application form, I didn' realise that the date format for the UK (and Canada, I think) is different from the US. So when putting down my birthdate, I put 4/3/19xx which is April 3rd. However to the University it's March 4. Oh well. Now I have 2 birthdays within a month of each other!

Happy Anti-Birthday!
I'm confused that you don't have a collar and tags for Miles already. I would say yes to getting the collar and tags, just in case.
As for the cat fighting, I would say test it out first. Put Miles and his doppleganger together in the little area but be there to supervise. If it looks like they'll survive, I saw go for it for letting Miles out to roam a bit.
Of course, I've never had a cat so I don't know how these things work so you don't have to listen to anything I'm saying (except maybe about the collar and tags).
:-)
Answer 1: The date thing is the same in Canada as in the UK.
Answer 2: Tags are a great idea, but don't really work without a collar
Answer 3: Well had it been one of the films I would have insisted you WAIT, but since the book is for Uni, I figured you could use it now. Besides, that one really piqued my interest and the faster you read it, the sooner I'll know if I should get it for myself :D
Answer 4: You're right, I had no idea about your anti-birthday. So, I guess even more reason why you should open it. Can't have a birthday without a present.
*hugs and kisses*
d~
BTW: I wouldn't mind reading the Scots poems. No need for an aide thingy.
Posted by: drokka at March 4, 2005 11:31 PMDefinitely get a collar w/ tag for Miles, but don't put it on him then let him outside. Make sure he gets used to the collar first. If he's never worn a collar he might freak out until he gets used to it.
Posted by: Capn John at March 5, 2005 03:05 AMthe date thing is same in Aust too.
It was funny that when we went to Australia in 2002, while filling out the custom form, John was the one who made mistake with the date, he used the US format instead. ;)
Posted by: Liz at March 5, 2005 06:11 AMAh...good tips.
I don't think I'll be letting Mr Davis out into the close. I'm too afraid someone is going to let him outside outside, and I dont' know that he'd be able to find his way back.
Liz, how long have you and John been in the US? I'm still getting used to the date thing...I get all kinds of confused. :/
