Sounding Off!

There was an interesting article in our newspaper yesterday about area high school dress codes and why they aren't enforced. I went to a four year Catholic high school and we wore uniforms so other then the length of your skirt this was never an issue. I'm not saying one way or the other is better... and I'm not a prude but I've seen what gets worn to the local high school on a daily basis... can you say major distraction!
One of the reasons cited for not enforcing the dress code policy was (and I quote) "Enforcement of the school dress codes can be further complicated by opposite-sex teachers hesitating to approach their students about revealing clothing" Yes indeed a sign of our time. Can you say sexual harassment? If you think it's ok to tell a student of either gender that they're not dressed appropriately I'm here to tell you think again! I'm about to embark on a required course on sensitivity and sexual harassment training courtesy of my employer aka the school district. So why the hell have a dress code in place if it's unenforcable? Girls will continue to wear leather bustiers and boys their pants half way down their arse nobody is going to say diddly.

Here in Los Angeles, a lot of the public schools are switching to a mandate of either an established school uniform or a somewhat rigid set of rules for what can be worn to school.

The son of a friend of mine attends a LA Unified School District high school (aka public school) and he is required to wear black or blue pants (jeans are okay) with no rips or tears in them and an 90% white shirt (button down, polo, tshirt acceptable). Girls have the same thing, but they can wear skirts, provided that the skirts clearly touch their knees. And both genders can wear shorts, but they can't be torn or super short or super loose.
And that's a public school!
