Dear Pedestrians,
I get it. I really do. It’s hard to be a non-driver in Los Angeles. I know this because I spent the first 10 years of my life in L.A. with no car. I know what it’s like to have to change busses multiple times, at night, in not-so-great neighborhoods. I know what it’s like to ride on said busses with mentally challenged folks. Or hygenically challenged folks. And I know what it’s like to have to walk from wherever you are to wherever you want to go because you don’t have a car. Going from home to the grocery store or the corner market or whatever is a pain. But honestly, if you’re going to be a pedestrian in Los Angeles, please learn the rules. Let me help you with 3 of them.
Rule #1 – Check the road BOTH ways before you decide to cross the road. Guess what? Maybe it’s clear one way, but not the other. I realize that you have the right of way, but I’m in a big box on wheels that weighs a lot more than you do. It’s not that easy for me to stop.
Rule #2 – Don’t wear dark colors at night. By the time my headlights get close enough to define your shape from the myriad of others, it might be too late.
Rule #3 – At a cross walk, decide which way you want to go and stick with it. Also, facing the way you’re going to walk helps too. If I’m waiting to make a right turn, I need to know that when the light turns green, you’re not going to decide to jump out in front of me.
I hope these 3 rules help you navigate the sea of cars.
Yours,
that crazy bitch in the white honda that almost mowed you over today.
